Different Types of Orthodontics Treatments

Orthodontics treatment is one of the most popular forms of cosmetic dentistry. This branch of dentistry deals primarily with the aesthetic aspects of the mouth, with a focus on correcting teeth and chewing problems. Orthodontics can be broadly categorized into two main areas: prosthodontics, which aims to correct malocclusion or misalignment of teeth; and orthodontics, which focuses on dental implants, alignment, realignment, bonding, dentures, bridges, veneers, mouth guards, bite-wear, whitening, and orthodontic headgear. Orthodontics, therefore, provides treatments for various disorders related to the mouth and bite. Orthodontics treatment involves both surgical and non-surgical procedures, which are performed by qualified dentists.

The most common orthodontic treatment includes braces, which are mainly used for straightening mild to moderate crooked teeth. Braces are usually applied by the orthodontist when the patient is young and is still growing. The orthodontist can apply traditional metallic braces or soft metal braces, which are more comfortable to wear. Metal braces are more effective in straightening teeth but can be uncomfortable and may eventually lead to deterioration of gums. Soft metal braces are recommended for adolescents since they are more comfortable to wear and don't damage the teeth enamel when removed.

Another common orthodontics treatment method includes Invisalign, which is an innovative removable orthodontic appliance that can be fitted to the mouth during meals or anytime an object is stuck between teeth. When the patient is eating, the orthodontist aligns the patient's teeth so that the food does not fall out of place. Each time the patient removes the appliance, the alignment issues are corrected automatically. Unlike traditional braces, which require frequent removals, Invisalign can be removed after eating and during sleep for an easy cleaning.

Another orthodontics treatment, Invisalign, can correct misalignment issues by correcting the position of the jaw. When a person is born with a crooked or crowded bite, this condition can cause discomfort and headaches. The orthodontist aligns the jaw so that the patient has a better bite and will not experience these problems. The appliance is most effective for children and adolescents who suffer from crowded or crooked teeth.

Teeth misalignment may also be caused by severe trauma or disease such as cancer. In such cases, an orthodontist can perform Invisalign to straighten the teeth and restore their proper alignment. An oral surgeon performs a root canal when teeth are seriously damaged or when the pulp inside the tooth bleeds. This procedure requires general anesthesia and is done in a surgical facility. A small titanium screw is used to remove the infected pulp and the teeth may need to be cemented back for complete closure.

Although most adults will outgrow the problem, young people may also have orthodontics treatments performed to straighten their teeth and gain a more attractive smile. Invisalign is more effective than braces because it aligns the entire mouth so that the patients can eat, speak, laugh and look confident. Braces, on the other hand, may cause facial asymmetry and decrease a patient's self-esteem. An adult with severely crooked teeth may look unfriendly and unapproachable, but with Invisalign, these issues will be solved.
